Maine Anticipates Spectacular Fall Foliage

September 10, 2014 Marks the Official Launch of Season

Today is the official start of Maine’s fall foliage season.  The 2014 Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry reports that the northernmost area of the state is still green with hints of color.

“Ever so subtle changes are occurring in the northern regions of the state (zones 6 and 7), but right now we are still on track for a typical fall foliage season with northern Maine reaching peak conditions by the end of September into the first week of October.  The rest of the state’s progression of color will start occurring from north to south in mid-October. Coastal Maine typically reaches peak conditions October 13 through October 25,” according to Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson.

Unique air show features planes of all sizes

SANFORD, Maine

(NEWS CENTER) -- Air shows almost always bring out large audiences -- but have you ever seen a crowd go wild for a model airplane, and a pilot with a remote control?

It happened Sunday at the Maine Jet Rally and Model Expo at the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport at the annual air show.

The Maine Jet Rally has been bringing in professional pilots to perform for nearly 20 years. Three years ago, organizers decided to broaden the experience, and bring in model-makers.

"We want to introduce modeling in a way that's not really done any place else," said organizer Ray Labonte, from Ray and Robin's Hobby Center.

11-year old year logs 101 miles on bike

SANFORD, Maine -- (NEWS CENTER) -- An 11-year old Sanford girl is heading back to school with a big sense of accomplishment after taking up her neighbor's challenge to bike 101 miles this summer.

Starting in late June, Cassidy Tierney and Jim Arsenault rode 12 miles -- about 10 laps around their neighborhood, each week. The pair completed 101 miles last week. The trek took about two hours -- during that time the 5th grader worked on her math skills and learned how to navigate safely on the road. Both say the ride was all about having fun. Cassidy hopes to invite her friends to hit the road in the future.
