PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A pair of proud parents from Springvale welcomed Maine's first baby of the new year.

Alejandro Joseph Mejia was born at 3:03 a.m. at Maine Medical Center.
Parents Carly and Alejandro say they never expected to have a New Year baby because he wasn't due for another three weeks.
In all the commotion, they didn't realize they had Maine's first baby of 2012 until well into the day.
Carly Mejia said, "I think the nurses on the floor were really excited because they thought that he might be. So I know they were calling all the local hospitals this morning to see. But we didn't know until a couple of hours ago when somebody told us that he was the first Maine baby."
