Fire in Alfred causes $200,000 damage at auto shop
News

ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER ) -- The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fire at an auto salvage and repair shop in Alfred.

Workers with J&J Auto discovered smoke when they opened the doors to an unattached garage in the backyard Tuesday morning.

The fire started sometime overnight and had already put itself out by the time fire fighters were called to the scene at 9am.

Most of the damage was smoke and heat created, but the building housed expensive hot rods in the process of renovation, plus heavy machinery key to the business's operation, like a front-end loader and a ramp truck.

Overall, the damage is estimated to be worth more than $200,000.

J&J owners say they are still open for business, they just can't pick up salvage cars.
