York County gets grant to combat domestic violence

SANFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The York County Sheriff's Department is getting a grant to help combat domestic violence.

Non-profit group Caring Unlimited held its annual vigil Wednesday night to raise awareness for domestic violence. Sheriff Maurice Ouelette announced a four hundred fifty thosuand dollar grant that will pay for a second officer dedicated to working domestic violence cases. That will make it easier to follow up on domestic violence arrests.

"With the new detective that we're going to have, these people are going to be on notice that the next knock on the door might not be the postmaster," Sheriff Ouelette said. "It might be a police officer checking to see if that individual is there when he shouldn't be there."

The Maine Department of Labor calls them "Exhaustees", and has set up a series of programs aimed at putting these Mainers back to work. Others refer to them as "The Invisible Unemployed" because they are not counted in Unemployment reports or as part of the workforce.
